    • Third grade students will....
    • place major events in the development of their local community and Michigan in chronological order
    • use narratives and data to compare the past and present
    • locate and describe cultures and compare the similarities and differences among the roles of women, men and families
    • explain basic ecosystem concepts and processes
    • explain how various people and cultures have adopted to and modified the environment
    • identify major United States regions and land forms
    • give examples of authority
    • explain responsibilities citizens have to uphold government
    • explain how prices are determined in a market economy
    • learn and apply map skills

Reading and Language Arts

Third grade students will....

    • understand and identify author’s purpose
    • apply and synthesize information gained through reading 
    • use reading, writing, speaking, listening to make connections
    • identify and use parts of speech
    • identify and create complete sentences and paragraphs
    • use appropriate punctuation and capitalization
    • examine word structure and phonetics
    • prepare and present information using a variety of strategies
    • understand and use word structure to spell words correctly
    • understand and apply a variety of study and test taking strategies
    • create original writing pieces
    • compile a variety of writing samples
    • distinguish between fact and opinion
    • identify story’s main idea and draw conclusions

Science

Third grade students will....

    • generate reasonable questions about the world
    • observe and record evidence of science in their world
    • conduct experiments, record and discuss results
    • use simple measurement devices
    • construct charts and graphs
    • develop an awareness of and sensitivity to the natural world
    • explain common patterns of interdependence and interrelationships of living things
    • describe the basic requirements for all living things
    • classify common objects and substances according to observable attributes
Mathematics

Third grade students will....

    • multiply facts through ten
    • divide two digit divisors without remainders
    • add and subtract decimals
    • make change using coins
    • interpret, analyze, compare and construct graphs
    • define place value through 1000
    • use calculators to solve word problems
    • use various hands-on materials to learn mathematical concepts
    • compare geometric shapes
