Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education is a program in which students work in businesses to gain experience and receive training for their future. Most Co-op students earn money while working and are able to prepare for further education or vocational placement while building a resume for future use. Co-op programs are available for students in the following areas:
-  Marketing
- Office Careers
- Health Care
- Child Care
- Careers in the Service Industry
- Building Trades
- Other occupations (based on the need of the student)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Admission into the co-op program is based on approval of the coordinator. Grades, attendance, and behavior of the applicant will be reviewed and a preadmission interview will take place. Probationary status and/or a contract may be applicable in certain situations.
     
  • Co-op is a one-year program and may not be terminated by the student until the end of his/her school year. If a student quits the job, for any reason, without permission of the coordinator, the student will receive a failure for the job and loss of credit. Students may be added second semester at the discretion of the coordinator.
     
  • The student must be at least 16 years old and is responsible for providing his/her own transportation.
     
  • SATISFACTORY GRADES IN ALL SUBJECTS MUST BE MAINTAINED. Failure to do so may cause removal from co-op.
     
  • All students will attend appropriate co-op activities, including the appreciation banquet. There will be a fee for the banquet as well as for class materials. The students is expected to pay for all necessary and reasonable expenses.
     
  • Students will leave the school property immediately following their school day, unless given permission by an administrator.
     
  • In the event that the student is released from his/her job for cause, the student will not receive credit for Co-op and will receive and "E" for the job grade.

This class is open only for seniors working in a approved co-op job. The students will work on activities and projects that relate to their jobs and study advanced  marketing methods. Movies, guest speakers, and field trips supplement the text and workbook.  See a coordinator in the spring to help in job placement. and career pathway matching. Workplace safety training, human relations and job skills are covered in order to help the student become a successful employee. Marketing jobs need to match the Career Pathways identified in the Business, Management, Marketing & Technology, Human Services, and Arts and Communications clusters.

7573       MARKETING CO-OP JOB                               12                                      0.5-2.0               *Approval of coordinator

Co-op  offers the students an opportunity to receive high school credit for work experience. The job is considered a class, and the employer is the on-the-job teacher. Students can receive assistance finding a job through the co-op office or can continue working at an approved workstation.  The student will receive a grade and credit based on work performance and work related assignments. Students must also be enrolled in course 7563-Marketing Co-Op Related. Coordinator will assist with job placement for students not currently working.

7203    SERVICE/TRADE CO-OP RELATED               12                                        1.0                   *Approval of coordinator

This course is available to seniors working in an approved co-op job in any of the following career pathways: Human Services, Arts & Communications, Engineering/Manufacturing & Industrial Technology or Natural Resources & Agriscience. The class is designed to coordinate with and enhance the student's co-op job experience. Workplace safety training, human relations and job skills are covered in order  to help the student become a successful employee. See a coordinator in the spring to help in job placement.

7213       SERVICE/TRADE CO-OP JOB                             12                                 0.5-2.0              *Approval of coordinator

This program offers students the opportunity to receive high school credit for  real life work experience.  This course is available to seniors who are working in an approved co-op job in any of the following career pathways: Human Services, Arts & Communications, Engineering/Manufacturing & Industrial Technology or Natural Resources & Agriscience. The student will receive a grade based on work performance on the job, completion of related assignments, and compliance with the co-op rules. The job is considered a class, and the employer is the on-the-job teacher. Students must also be enrolled in the Service/Trade Co-op Related class,#7203 or a Skill Center Related class. Coordinator will assist with job placement for students not currently working.

7433           OFFICE CO-OP RELATED                                12                                    1.0                    *Approval of coordinator

This course is available to seniors working in an approved co-op office job in the Business, Management, Marketing & Technology or Health Sciences career pathways. The class is designed to coordinate with and enhance the students co-op job experience. Skills that will help the student succeed in an office job will be covered such as: computer use, telephone use, filing, grooming, human relations, career planning, workplace safety training and much more.

This course is designed for students who are interested in an office position working in the Business, Management, Marketing & Technology or Health Sciences career pathways. The student will receive credit based on work performance on the job, completion of related assignments, and compliance with the co-op rules. The job is considered a class, and the employer is the the on-the-job teacher.  Students must also be enrolled in the Office Co-op Related Class,#7433 or a Skill Center related class. Coordinator will assist with job placement for students not currently working.

  • Failure to call coordinator when you're absent from school or work.(-5 pts)

  • Failure to turn in time sheet.(-5 pts)

  • Failure to turn in time sheet on time. (-2 pts)

Failure of co-op, reduction of grade,
and/or loss of credit may occur for:

  • Insufficient points. (See grading scale below)

  • If  you are fired from or quit your job.

  • If  you drop co-op without permission from your coordinator.

  • Failure to follow co-op rules.
