Dear Swartz Creek Swimming Alumni, Family and Friends,
The name Dick Richards is synonymous with Swartz Creek Swimming and Diving. He is the “Father of Swartz Creek Swimming”. Throughout his 26 year tenure as the head swim and dive coach he created one of the most competitive and respected programs in the area. He was also instrumental in the development of many young men and women, out of the pool, in the classroom and other sports.
It is safe to say, any of us who participated in the swimming and diving program at Swartz Creek have been influenced by the contributions Dick made in our lives. For me personally, he is the reason I went to college to become a teacher and coach. So much so, I even majored in Physical Education and minored in Science, the subjects Dick taught at the high school and middle school level over his 37 year teaching career. Even though I left the education field, I daily utilize the life lessons I learned from Dick in the pool.
Dick passed away suddenly in January of this year. A memorial service was held with family, friends, colleagues as well as many former swimmers, divers, and students paying their respects. Shortly after the memorial service, I was approached to look into the possibility of having the pool named in his memory.
A group of volunteers are working with the Swartz Creek School District to launch a fundraising campaign to raise money for the swim program and to name the Swartz Creek Middle School Pool the “Dick Richards Natatorium”. In order to make this dream a reality we are asking for your help. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of 2016 to help the Swartz Creek Schools swim program with much needed pool equipment upgrades, such as a new PA system, diving board, and lane markers.
Please join me and others in remembering and honoring Dick Richards’ legacy with your tax deductible contribution to the naming of the pool and supporting Swartz Creek Swimming and Diving. If you have any questions, please contact me at (951)531-7146 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sincerely in Dick’s memory,
Swartz Creek Class of 1973
P.S. Once we meet our fundraising goal, we plan to have a celebratory unveiling at the new “Dick Richards Natatorium”.
