 Majority of time to define science and discuss the benefits to science and its impact on quality of life (group discussion)

 Did a brief group activity to review Ms. Pettit’s procedures

 Took a Pre-Test on the nature of science to give Ms. Pettit a starting point with her classes  (What do they already know, how well did they pay attention to today’s class discussion, who needs more time on tests etc.)

 Went over the lab activity from Monday – focused on collaboration, bias, analyzing and the definition of theory

 Number your paper 1 -10 – Put the answer to today’s SURPIRSE HOMEWORK QUIZ on your bellwork.

 What did we do/study in class today?

 Took a quiz over the homework assigned on Tuesday – graded it in class as a review discussion

 Completed the white packet assigned Tuesday – lots of teacher led discussion about variables and constants!!

 Worked in pairs to complete the remaining questions 2-9 in the white packet

Finished the white packet “Controlled Experiments” to make sure everyone knew the correct answers

Watched a movie about Galileo Galilee and talked about the history of Science compared to the times of the church and Aristotle  - Get yellow WS on the video and copy someone’s

OBJECTIVE:

  Perform an experiment with only 1 variable

BELLWORK ASSIGNMENT:

1.  Write a list of observations about Ms. Pettit as she lights a candle today in class and as you watch it burn.

What did we do/study in class today?

Discussed the movie from yesterday – answered all questions

Did The Candle Lab Experiment– This is a lab you MUST MAKE UP IF ABSENT. This is an experiment that reviews all the components of a good experiment. 

The lab and data analysis took all hour.  Students recorded their results on the class data sheets.   We waited to answer the questions – no homework over the weekend.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 21st

  Analyze the data from Friday’s lab

BELLWORK ASSIGNMENT:

Review Friday’s Lab:  Based on the original hypothesis –

1. What was the independent variable?

2.  What was the dependent variable?

3.  What were 2 things you had to keep constant?

 What did we do/study in class today?

Reviewed variables (last week’s notes and assignments)

SURPRISE QUIZ on SCI METHOD and VARIABLES

       Graded the quiz in class

 Analyzed the data from Friday’s candle lab – students made a box and whisker plot us statistical analysis of 3 classes worth of data 

(Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max, Mode - know what these terms mean and how to find them )

 

Rest of the hour – students were given a set of data to analyze and prepare a box and whisker plot of it

 Went over the bellwork and Ms. Pettit assigned homework reading chapter 1 and taking notes (Quiz on it Thursday)

Finished graphing the candle lab data and completed the analysis portion of the lab

Discussed bellwork – reviewed the different kinds of graphs and when to use each one, including box and whiskers

Reviewed sci method – reminded class of quiz tomorrow over Ch. 1 in the book (Quiz is open note)

Took Chapter 1 Open Note Quiz beginning of the hour

Worked quietly on a packet related to data and how to evaluate it

(You only have to do the pink one or the green one but not both)

Reviewed the work from the last 2 days of class – went over the assignments about DHMO, gathering evidence

 Discussed accuracy and how to use various measuring tools to find volume, length, mass and temperature

Did a measurement practice lab using equipment all around the room – ABSENT STUDENTS MUST MAKE THIS UP AFTER SCHOOL SOMETIME BEFORE THURSDAY

  Create graphs of measurement lab data

BELLWORK ASSIGNMENT:

1. How many number lines should you have when you are comparing 3 box and whisker plots of the same data?

2.  What does a box look like if the data is very close and everyone got near the same answer?

3.  Why is it better to consider the median instead of the average when analyzing data?

What did we do/study in class today?

Looked over the results from Friday’s measurement lab

Divided up the students into groups to graph the data by making box and whisker plots that analyze the data

Assigned a History of Science webquest with questions online for students to research and answer
