Dear Dragon Families,
We want to make you aware of an important letter from the Genesee County Superintendents regarding the uncertainty around Michigan’s state budget and how it may affect our schools.
Click HERE to read the letter:
The letter explains the potential impacts on students, staff, and programs if lawmakers do not approve a K–12 budget soon. It also shares how you can help by contacting your state representatives and urging them to protect the School Aid Fund for its original purpose — educating Michigan’s children.
Please take a few minutes to read the letter and consider reaching out to your elected officials.
• Michigan Senate: https://senate.michigan.gov/
• Michigan House of Representatives: https://www.house.mi.gov/Index
Together, we can ensure that our students continue to receive the resources and support they deserve without interruption.
Sincerely,
Jim Kitchen

Exciting News for Swartz Creek Community Schools!
Even though the state of Michigan has yet to determine the continuation of the Michigan School Meals Program, Swartz Creek Community Schools WILL continue to offer FREE breakfast and lunch to ALL students in grades pre-K through 12!
If the Michigan School Meals bill is passed, we will be able re-invest these additional funds into your child's meals, update our kitchens and equipment, and update cafe environments and furniture.
We need your help!
Please fill out the Education Benefit Form through the Meal Magic Family Portal. Gathering this information is crucial for determining eligibility for Summer Food Service Programs, and ensuring our schools receive full access to federal and state funding for educational programs. Parents can create an account or just fill out the form without creating one. Please ONLY add children who are currently registered with Swartz Creek Schools. Any other children in another District or not yet registered should be added to the “number of members in the household”.
Visit our website: [swartzcreek.org](
http://swartzcreek.org) and click “Food Service” for more information. or contact Food Services directly at 810-591-1864
The Meal Magic Family Portal is also a fantastic resource for families. Here, you can set up accounts for your children to deposit money, view purchases, transfer funds between children, and set restrictions. Both the Middle and High School offer a la carte items for all students, whether they bring a lunch or eat a free meal, they can purchase additional items for lunch. Menus are available on the food service page under the NutriSlice tab, detailing nutritional value, calories, macros, and allergens.
If your student has special dietary needs, please contact our food service department directly. This will ensure that their meals are modified and documented accordingly for state compliance, and the school will be notified of any dietary restrictions.

Back-to-School Information and Helpful Tips for Families
Swartz Creek Community Schools will welcome students back for the 2025–2026 school year on Wednesday, August 20. Please note that the first day will be a half-day PM for all students. See dismissal times by building listed below.
To help families prepare for a smooth start to the school year, here are a few helpful tips:
1. Ease Into a Routine:
Start adjusting your child’s bedtime and wake-up time now. Getting into a consistent routine before school begins helps students feel more rested and ready to learn.
2. Practice Lunch Skills:
If your student is in the younger grades, take time to practice opening lunch items such as snack bags, containers, and juice boxes. This helps build independence and confidence during lunch time.
3. Organize Supplies:
General supply lists can be found on our district website. Teachers will also communicate classroom-specific needs. Having a few basic items packed and ready in your child’s backpack is a great starting point.
4. Talk About the School Day:
Discussing what to expect on a typical school day can ease first-day jitters and help your child feel more confident heading into the new year.
5. Label All Belongings:
Make sure your child’s backpack, lunchbox, water bottle, and outerwear are clearly labeled. This increases the chances of lost items making their way back home.
Early 5s and Kindergarten Families:
You will receive information in the mail regarding a one-hour welcome meeting on the first day of school. Parents attend this session with their child to help support a confident and positive transition into school.

Dear Swartz Creek Families and Community Members,
As you may be aware, Flint & Genesee Economic Development has presented a proposal to purchase Morrish Elementary for $40 million. If accepted, the sale would fully fund the construction of a new school building elsewhere in the district, without additional cost to taxpayers. The transition to a new building would not occur before Fall 2028.
It’s important to know that the Morrish Elementary site sits adjacent to land that may soon become a large-scale manufacturing zone. This proposal would allow the district to relocate the school before significant development takes place in that area.
We know this is an important decision for our district, and we want to hear your thoughts.
Please take a few minutes to complete our brief survey by July 14, 2025. Your input will help guide the Board of Education as they consider the future of Morrish Elementary and the broader impact on our community.
Link to survey:

Additionally, we are planning a community Town Hall meeting on July 17 at the Swartz Creek Performing Arts Center at 6:30 PM. More details will be shared soon. We hope you’ll join us.
Thank you for partnering with us as we plan for the future of Swartz Creek Community Schools.
With appreciation,
Jim Kitchen
Interim Superintendent
